Fleas are tiny (1/16 inch), hard-bodied, jumping pests that can infest carpets, animal bedding and furniture. After hatching, flea larvae remain hidden deep in carpet fibers and other protected areas, and they can be very difficult to eradicate. An adult flea can lay up to 50 eggs per day, so once you have a few inside, you can end up with a full-blown infestation very quickly. An early indication of a flea problem indoors can be excessive scratching by pets, particularly near the base of the tail, ears and eyes.
To prevent an indoor flea infestation, launder or change pet bedding often and treat pets continuously with a flea control product labeled for use on pets. Vacuum often, paying particular attention to pet resting areas, cracks between floors and baseboards, carpets and upholstered furniture. Be sure to dispose of the vacuum bag after vacuuming. To prevent fleas from traveling indoors on pests, regularly treat outdoors with a lawn insect control product registered for use against fleas.
